Aquaponic Vegetable Growing

Aquaponics is a process that combines the raising of fish and growing plants in water. The two processes work together naturally, as one system with three critical factors: beneficial bacteria, composting worms, and organic vegetables for both systems.

  • The Fish

There are many different types you can choose from, but Tilapia might be your best choice if it's not yet clear what type to purchase! Tilapia is the most popular fish to grow and there are many other freshwater options to consider. All varieties of freshwater fish work well in an aquaponic system.

  • The System

In the backyard, an aquaponics system can be optimal for many reasons. Not only does it provide a controlled environment to your fish and plants but also free sunlight! There are some added bonuses as well—the water in tanks or grow beds provides thermal mass that moderates temperature extremes all year long.

For those without backyards, there’s no need to worry; you still have options like basements and garages which can house your systems just fine during extreme weather conditions

  • Recycle

Aquaponic gardens are as easy to set up and use in your own backyard or home, all you need is a bit of time. They can even be constructed using recycled materials like old bathtubs and commercial containers used for shipping liquid foodstuffs.
